After meeting guests post-Lao immigration, we head by minivan to the Anouvong Cruise, docked at Huay Xai Per. Our crew handles check-in and luggage as we set off on a 3-night Upper Mekong cruise.
En route to our first stop, our guide introduces Laos' ethnic diversity along the Mekong. You'll soon explore these cultures firsthand.
Passing the Mekong and a tributary, we approach a modern village of 800 Tai Lu people, known across several countries. We'll experience the Baci ceremony, a warm and sincere Laotian ceremony done by local older people, giving good wishes for your trip.
The ship then sails to Huay Ting, where we anchor on a sandbank for the night, starting with a welcome cocktail and dinner amidst stunning scenery. Welcome to the Laotian Mekong experience.
Early risers are invited to join our morning yoga on the deck, against the Mekong's beautiful backdrop.
We arrive in Pakbeng, home to Laos' leading elephant sanctuary, where we meet elephants once used for logging, now living in a near-natural habitat. Due to their past, releasing them into the wild isn't feasible, making this sanctuary a key ecotourism site. Time permitting, we'll also visit a hilltop in Pakbeng for stunning views.
After lunch, get creative in a bamboo weaving workshop, crafting your own basket to keep as a souvenir.
In the afternoon, we explore a unique village where Hmong, Lao Loum, and Khamo ethnic groups share their diverse cultures and lifestyles. Our lecture comes to life as we learn about their traditions and possibly visit their organic gardens.
Back on the ship, as afternoon turns to evening, come to the bar for snacks and a sneak peek at tomorrow's plans. Before dinner, villagers will come aboard to show us the "Kene" flute on the deck, and we'll enjoy its captivating tunes and special dance moves.
After dinner, join us for the 1927 film "Chiang" in the lounge, setting the stage for the next day's journey.
Start your day with rejuvenating yoga against the Mekong's scenic backdrop. We set sail early, offering breakfast with a view of the river's morning life. Our visit to Khok Luang, home to the Khum people, showcases simple bamboo homes and rice fields. Here, we meet families living traditionally, relying on farming. Through observation and conversation, we gain deep insights into their lives and experiences.
Afterward, we return to the ship for lunch as our journey continues.
By afternoon, we stop at Ban Khok Phou, a 200-year-old village, to see farming and a Baci ceremony, a warm and sincere Laotian ceremony done by local older people, giving good wishes for your trip.
After returning to the ship for a relax, the evening starts with a drink on the sandbank, then a carefully planned goodbye dinner in this ideal spot. Enjoy your last night on the Laotian Mekong River, as the evening light fades into the peaceful night.
Ending our 3-night cruise, we near the famous Pak Ou Caves before reaching Luang Prabang. A simple yet varied breakfast sets the stage for a brunch before disembarking.
At Pak Ou Caves, you can learn about Laos' ethnic diversity from our guide. The caves hold around 4,000 Buddhist figures. Afterward, you can choose between 2 options: kayak on the Nam Ou River or visit Ban Muang Keo for silk weaving and traditional healing practices.
Back on the ship, we discuss Lao life and enjoy a final brunch. You can immerse yourself in a presentation about the Golden Triangle's history, covering its colonial, opium, and conflict narratives, as we sail through this iconic region.
We expect to arrive in Luang Prabang by 03:00 PM, assisting with luggage and farewells at the town center pier, wishing you well on your travels. End of services.
